Macbook Pro Broken Screen - stuck at password lock screen on extended monitor

Hello

My macbook pro 16inch has a broken screen and I have connected an external monitor. It boots up fine and on the password screen, I am getting lockout messages for 5 min/15 min and it increases when I try multiple times.

I tried logging into the recovery mode by long pressing power button, the apple logo show up, along with the progress bar, which goes just little less than half way, following which the display on monitor goes off. I am assuming that the recovery screen then show up on the laptop screen, which obviously I cannot see.

Is there a way for me to see the recovery screen or any other way to reset the password. Please guide.

Try pressing Command + F1 to toggle display mirroring on/off.

Or, if that does not work, then connect the charger and a wired USB keyboard & mouse. Close the display to enable ClamShell mode so video is hopefully forced to the external display.

Thank you. What is clamshell?

Another thing that has happened now is that restart of the laptop is going in a loop of Apple logo, progress bar going half way and display going off the monitor! I’m no longer being able to go to user name password screen! Do you think the system is booting me into recovery mode or is it some other kind of loop and how do I get off from it to get to user name password screen?

"Clamshell" mode is when you use the laptop with the display lid closed.

Assuming the laptop is booting normally, just give the laptop enough time to boot to the login screen, then use the Command + F1 keys to toggle video to the external display. If the laptop is not booting anymore & is actually restarting on its own, then place the laptop into Clamshell Mode in order to attempt to force video to the external screen. If this does not work because you can see the laptop in a boot loop (you do get video on the external display...see the progress bar & it starts over), then you will need to try to boot the laptop into Safe Mode in case there is an issue with third party software. Getting Safe Mode to work on an Apple Silicon Mac can be tricky if you cannot see the information on the built-in display.
