Can't attach file in Mac Mail also can't drag item to the trash

Hi There,

I was wondering if anyone can help.

All of a sudden I'm having two very frustrating problems. I'm not sure if they are both linked or not.

In mac mail - When I drag a file or use the paper clip to attach a document (small pdf, jpg etc) to an email I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit.
When I drag a folder to the trash (big or small) I get the spinning wheel and after 3/4 minutes the item goes to the trash.

I've tried updating to the latest version but it won't let me, so I've reinstalled the older version and yet the problems still happen.

Things have been working fine for the last few years and all of a sudden its started (before updates) - very strange. Can anyone help fix this or has anyone else had this problem.

Hi TerryScruff,

As we understand it, you see a spinning wheel on your Mac and it seems to happen in a few different circumstances. Since you've found this still happens after installing a different macOS version, we recommend starting by testing this in safe mode.

Safe mode will run a basic disk repair and then prevents a few items from launching, so it's a good step to help rule out possible causes. The steps will vary depending on your Mac processor. Here's How to use safe mode on your Mac.

"How to use safe mode

Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

Apple silicon

Shut down your Mac.
Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Intel processor

Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

Once you reach safe mode, test it to see how your Mac works. Then click Apple menu () > Restart to get back to normal.
