accidental event recurrence + deletion of original event

I've gone through 2 mistakes today: one is creating a recurring event in the calendar without noticing it (for which I removed the recurrence), and then deleting the original event apparently before the recurrences had been removed from my calendar (I was never offered a choice of removing the event vs. all the instances, as far as I remember). Is there any way to get rid of them? . I certainly hope that there is...
