Too many apps open - how to avoid this?

I reach a point when a new app will not open because there are too many in the background. How can I get them to close down when finished with?

iPad, iOS 10

That is simply a suggestion when you have enough RAM to run all the apps that you do. Once the RAM is full then your will get the “too many apps open” message. You will be fine. I recommend that you close out all open apps and start fresh.

Thanks Axel F. I have done this and closed 6-8 apps and it allows the new app to work. But I see the sentence "You should close an app only if it’s unresponsive." I wonder why that is?
