since we need a tri-band phone in USA for calling, i wonder if i can use an old iPhone 5S which we bought in Europe. (of course i have to buy a temporary sim-card in the USA).
Does Apple use different frequency standards voor iPhones sold in Europe? or are they all the same?

All iPhones can be used globally with any SIM unless the iPhone is locked to a carrier.
To be able to use any SIM across the globe you must have "No SIM Restriction" against Network Provider Lock. Please refer to the pic below.
On my phone there is no such information.. i think i have to ask my provider for an unlock code.
