macOS 13.3 - USB devices become unusable after a few hours

Hi there. After updating to macOS 13.3 I've had some weird issues with USB devices becoming unusable unless I reboot my iMac. This starts happening after a few hours of display sleep. It's possible this could still happen without display sleep, but I haven't tried leaving the iMac idle with the display on.

Observations

  • All USB devices are no longer usable (MIDI keyboard, Wacom tablet, Focusrite audio interface, external hard drives)
  • At no time are any processes shown as not responding in Activity Monitor
  • It doesn't happen immediately and it seems to happen after the display has been asleep for several hours (usually overnight) - I have "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off" turned on
  • I usually notice this is happening when my Wacom tablet becomes unusable, and disconnecting/reconnecting has no effect - it also isn't usable over Bluetooth
  • Connecting a Magic Mouse over Bluetooth works fine

Once this starts happening, other weird things happen as well.

  • Logging out/rebooting results in a hang, though the cursor is still movable
  • Rebooting must be done with a forced reboot using the power button
  • Quitting an app could result in the app freezing
  • Opening an app could result in the app freezing before fully launching

Things I've tried

  • Recovery mode First Aid on the startup disk SSD (no problems found)
  • Disconnecting external hard drives (HDDs) to check if it's a failing external drive causing problems (no effect) - the two external drives are not showing any problems in general but they are around 5 years old. The drives are currently still disconnected and have been so for a day as of writing this.

Connected devices (iMac 27 inch 2020)

  • Two external HDDs connected directly to the iMac's USB ports
  • Apple Watch charger connected to a USB-C port
  • USB-A hub connected to a USB-C port (4 port, Keymox brand)
  • Wacom tablet connected to the USB hub
  • Focusrite audio interface connected to the USB hub
  • MIDI keyboard connected to the USB hub
  • I've had all of these devices for 2 or more years without problems

Any ideas as to what might be happening? Any other info I can provide? I'll be contacting Apple Support this week as well, as I do have AppleCare coverage remaining.

During my testing (recorded in my various updates to this thread), I found that it happens more often when I have my external hard drives connected. However, it still happens even without them connected. With the HDs connected it will happen almost daily. Without them, it happens maybe once a week.

The constant thing that I notice when this problem occurs is that the "makequeues" process is taking up a lot of CPU (the most of any process at the time). This also started when I updated to 13.3. The subsequent update 13.3.1 didn't fix it, and it never happened before 13.3.

Hello again @hero_a,

I've lasted almost a week now without any hangs. The change I made was to replace my USB webcam with a different one. I made this change on the hunch that the 100% CPU use in makequeues was due to some issue in USB causing queries to USB to get into a bad state. The spindump I took showed what I think was a load of kernel threads stuck within makequeues.

There's nothing special about the suspicious webcam and I've been using it for probably a year or more. I can only assume that some change in Ventura means that it doesn't recover properly from whatever issue the webcam is causing.

Of course, it could be that I've just been lucky for a few days in a row - but my instinct is that the issue is fixed.

You didn't mention a USB webcam in your system description but I would guess that a USB device in your setup (one of your external drives?) is triggering the issue in the same way.

I'll let you know if anything changes but, for now, cautiously hoping I'm done with this.

3 months have passed since I rebuilt my Mac (full wipe and OS reinstall). No crashes since then. I guess this means it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue but I can't provide further analysis other than that.

For what it's worth, a reinstall of macOS without a full wipe did not fix the issue so seems like it's quite low level.

Update (wish I could update the original post)

I've changed my setup to the following (reference original post for original setup):

  • Wacom tablet connected via Bluetooth
  • Reconnected one of the external hard drives (Time Machine drive) (USB A)
  • Connected MIDI Keyboard directly (USB A)
  • Connected Focisrite audio interface directly (USB A)
  • Removed USB hub from Thunderbolt/USB-C port

This was yesterday midday. Waking the computer this morning has not resulted in the odd behaviour. It could just be a coincidence, but if not, perhaps the USB hub could be the culprit (it's a brand I've never heard of, maybe it just got worn out). Or the other hard drive, which I have not reconnected yet (this drive is over 5 years old).

It's still possible none of the hardware is at fault and something in 13.3 is glitchy. I'll post another update if the problem happens again or when I test the USB hub and other hard drive.

Hello Hero_a,

Thank you for that detailed description and excellent details. I have a few questions. You mention two external drives, a watch charger, a USB HUB, Tablet, and MIDI board off a hub. Do those Hubs and HDDs have their own power supply or do they all draw power from the USB bridge in your iMac? I suspect you are pulling to much power through there and this may be causing a kernel panic. Additionally, I have ran into similar issues using USB hubs that draw power from the internal USB bridge.

I would suggest removing any hub that is connected and drawing power from the iMac. If this improves the situation then you may want to look into accessories that do not draw so much power from the internal USB bridge.

Update April 11, 2023.

As stated in my previous update on Apr 3 (about 8 days ago), I changed my setup to the following:

  • Wacom tablet connected via Bluetooth
  • Time Machine external drive (USB A)
  • MIDI Keyboard directly (USB A)
  • Focusrite audio interface directly (USB A)

A few days ago, I reconnected my other external hard drive. This drive is well over 6 years old. I'm calling this my media storage drive.

This morning the problem occurred again when I woke my iMac from its overnight sleep. No USB devices were usable, and some apps would freeze upon launch.

I've once again disconnected the media storage drive. My suspicion is that it's potentially this old drive. I've had similar problems in the past, though not identical to these symptoms. In the past, a bad drive had caused random freezes.

Let's see how this next week goes.

Hello LenJC57,

That sounds like you performed a SMC reset. The underlying issue is a power one, if that resolves it. In this article the instructions for a SMC are listed as a valid step to try. If this only temporarily resolves the issue, either there may be a failing USB bridge or your mac is compensating quite well for the amount of power being pulled through the USB ports.

I went nuclear on this. I completely wiped my Mac and then reinstalled MacOS 13.4 from scratch.

Since doing that I have had no more hangs.

Bad news is I don't really know what caused the issue. Good news is that it is fixed.

I did have a couple of failures to wake after sleeping at night or over weekend. I didn't see issue when USB all disconnected. I noticed my USB mouse had RGB that never seemed to go out so wondering if that wasn't sleeping properly. I've replaced mouse and no overnight hangs since then either.

So, to fix just completely rebuild you Mac and replace your USB devices. Simple. :)

I'm having a very similar issue to this except it doesn't only happen on wake up... it has been happening at least once a week at any random time of the day.

I tend to sleep my Mac at night and rarely power off.

Intel Macbook Pro 2019. MacOS 13.3.1.

No External USB drives connected.

USB Hub (via apple USB-A+HDMI+Power dongle) with mouse, keyboard, camera.

Initial symptom is that mouse and keyboard stop working (still getting power).

Fan runs fast and (if I'm quick) I can see makequeues taking high CPU.

Soon after spinner comes on - mouse still responds.

If I try to shutdown, loads of processes complain they are not responding

In the end I force poweroff. Everything fine on reboot.

Last step I've taken (because of link to makequeues) was uninstall all printers and delete their apps from ~/Library/Printers. Then reinstall just one printer (Canon Inkjet via Bonjour).

I'd love to figure out what is going on; anything I can do to help?

Update April 17, 2023

It's happened again. Upon waking the computer from overnight sleep.

Here is what's happening this time:

  • Again, no USB activity is present. External speakers don't work. MIDI keyboard doesn't work. However, both are still receiving power by USB.
  • Time Machine is unable to backup and is just stuck on "Connecting to backup disk" (likely related to the USB problem)
  • I've noticed two processes both taking up around 98% CPU: makequeues and OtherUsersStorageExtension
  • Everything else in Activity Monitor looks normal
  • Opening some apps is unsuccessful. Quitting and relaunching Safari made it freeze upon launch. Teams doesn’t launch at all and generates a crash report. Outlook launched fine. Slack launched fine.

I suspect something is wrong with the 13.3.1 update. I think I can safely remove the older external HD as a suspect, as it wasn't connected for the past several days.

I suppose it’s possible the Time Machine drive is slowly failing. It’s about 5 years old. I’ll try disconnecting it for a while once more.

Update April 22, 2023

Looks like it's happened again but slightly different.

I've not had my external hard drives connected since my previous update posted on April 17.

This afternoon, I woke the computer (it had been asleep since yesterday afternoon). And once again, no USB activity is present. USB devices still receive power, but their data input/output isn't working. So something is occurring where any USB input is being ignored or not reaching its destination in the system, and any output is also not happening (I have USB connected speakers and the iMac's internal speakers work fine, but no sound is output to the USB speakers when those are selected as the output). This time around, all apps are launching and quitting normally. So the only weird behaviour this time is just the USB activity.

I think I've collected enough observations to bring to Apple Support. My next step will be to talk to them. I'll give an update once I do.
