searchpartyd - what is it and options to manage it

searchpartyd is consuming a lot of CPU. My M1 MBP is running hot, battery is not lasting a long time etc. - bad situation.

There is so much mis information - calling it Malware but no real facts.

Does Apple publish any information about the utility?

If not Apple, does anyone have authoritative information about it?

  • what is its purpose
  • what starts the process and why does it take so long to run?
  • Do I have any options to manage it, make it nice etc.?

I'm surprised that apple is so silent on a piece of their software that looks like it misbehaves for many users.

Q - " Does the user have options to control the process? "

A - No - Predicated on the process is running as " Root User " that is residing in the  Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User nor by Third Party Applications.

The only Entity that can open and modify or alter this Volume is Apple.

Q - How can the user identify what applications may be triggering the process - perhaps one of the software products installed on my device has bad code.

A - Possible and to cut down on the back and forth Question Answer process

A - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

This " searchpartyd " is a Native Process to macOS and is not Malware or Adware

Welcome and thank you too. 🇨🇦

Predicated on the " searchpartyd " process on your computer is in fact running as Root User, I really am not sure why it is behaving as a Memory Hog

Though, the more Eyes on the Report, the more we may or may not see something that is causing this issue.

To give Create to the Developer of the Etrecheck Application - there is some evidence that this process could be a piece of Malware

To read more specific to the common symptoms include:

  • Your web browser’s default search engine is Searchpartyd Search
  • Your browser’s search queries are redirected through search.initialunit.com
  • The “Searchpartyd” browser extension or program is installed on your computer

It seems that searchpartyd could be either a built-in process or malware. I think this must have been accidental. Normally malware files are completely different from built-in file names.

You would have to provide more details about your specific “searchpartyd”. Specifically, what is the full path to the file?

I have done the lookups and my system reports all of the same information.

What I am looking for is definitive information about the process.

Someone must have researched it thoroughly (in light of the absence of information from Apple)

What events spawn the process?

Does the user have options to control the process?

How can the user identify what applications may be triggering the process - perhaps one of the software products installed on my device has bad code.

Here is what Apple publishes about it, from the man page:

searchpartyd(8)             System Manager's Manual            searchpartyd(8)

NAME
     searchpartyd – searchparty daemon

SYNOPSIS
     searchpartyd

DESCRIPTION
     searchpartyd is a daemon.

There are no configuration options to searchpartyd.  Users should not run
     it manually.

Mac OS X                            1/11/14                           Mac OS X

Note that it has not been updated since 2014.

Wow. Thank You (a lot)

EtreCheckPro is a great recommendation. I bought the extended features. Very informative.

I still don't know why searchpartyd is so prominent, but this will help zero in this and other problems.

One more time ... thank you

The software company operates just down the street so it's also nice to support a fellow Canadian technologist.
