Mini running Ventura - Epson printer scanner suddenly has NO SCAN button

I have an Epson Workforce 545 and 7510 for use with my newer mac mini running ventura.

The Epsons are both printer/scanners, and had been running just fine both printing and scanning until two days ago. Now the SCAN buttons are missing.

I have done the usual - removed and reinstalled, updated Ventura from 13.0.1 to 13.03, checked for updated Epson drivers/software (no changes there), tried other usb cables and ethernet cables, and rebooted multiple times.

I have also tried using the Image Capture and Preview methods to scan - but neither have anything to chose as an option for scanning. They don't see either printer/scanner.

I rely on these daily. What happened?

The last update I had prior to updating Ventura was whatever automatic Security updates go without my knowledge. Everything else is set to manually update so I don't lose functionality overnight when I don't have time to fix it. Like now.

Any suggestions? Anything I missed? Some new security setting that botched the scanner settings/driver up? I can see other people having similar issues with other printers, but no solutions.

Sitting on a hundred dollars of INK that only works with these printer/scanners, too, so unlikely to want to replace them any time soon. But I need the scanner to work too.

My printing is working fine, but when I double click the printer icon to see the Pause/Settings/Scan buttons and the print queue, the "scan' button is no longer there.

I was able to download the ACA driver to use the mac Image Capture app, so I think I am set for now.

I use ethernet and usb cables for printing, not wireless. I have that turned off, so AirPrint isn't an option for me I think.

I have other computers not connected to the internet that also need to be able to continue printing without having random upgrades. They run old software that needs to be preserved.

I suggest removing the Epson drivers and reinstall Printer using AirPrint. It is the best way to avoid the cat and mouse game after updating OS, then finding or waiting for drivers.

  • Go to  > System Settings > Printer & Scanners. Select your printer and remove.
  • Make sure printer is connected to the same wifi as your computer.
  • Add printer in the same Printer & Scanners setting.
  • It may take a couple of seconds to find your printer, but it should show up.
  • Select it and click Add

You will then have to use Image Capture for scanning, which works pretty good. Printing will not change that much.

Most all Multifunction Printers/Scanners will allow scanning using Image Capture without any Manufacturer drivers installed. Since Epson does not have the latest drivers for Ventura 13.3, the old drivers could interfere with this network connection. Removing the drivers and testing is how you isolate the problems.

Without any drivers installed, you will need to Add the printer/scanner using AirPrint/Bonjour to be able to print.
