Knocking sound on iPhone calls

Why do you I hear a knocking on wood type of sound when I am on the phone with other iPhone users? Does anyone else have this problem? It is very annoying I tried iPhone reset and carrier and hardware and no luck

About a month since I switched to T-Mobile. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. It sounds like someone is knocking or lightly hammering something (tap, tap, tap, tap). It stops when someone talks, but if there’s any silence it happens consistently.

Me too…. on the phone with my boyfriend and i start to hear knocking on his end as if someone was knocking on the wall from the room nextdoor. He couldn’t hear it, so i thoguht i was going crazy but i’m glad i found this thread. We’ve watched a few horror movies the past few days so we were quite spooked lol. Super weird, such a clear and distinct knocking on wood sound. Never happened to me before but i do have t mobile as well.

I did the same thing spent time with t mobile and went to an apple tech and said the device was fine and couldn’t figure it out. Seems there is no solution at this time but best thing that we know is it seems to be happening to a lot of people so it’s not just you.

Does anyone have this happening while on Verizon or another network provider?

I have tried Bluetooth through my car, AirPods, speaker and regular phone and happened with all three again I am with T Mobile this never happened when I was on Verizon. I feel if we all go to t mobile and reference this chat maybe they can see how many people are struggling with this issue and do something about it. I hope if anyone gets any feedback or solutions to please share with the group.

I have the same experience. My carrier is T Mobile and I thought it only happened when the person I was talking to was on speakerphone. However, I'm trying to isolate it; it also happens when I leave a VM. It's not a dirty screen or anything on my phone. It's a system problem. It's not a sharp knock. I also don't believe that it's due to a wiretap. The govt has better ways to do that without letting the user hear clunky noises in the background. I can do better than that by simply using one of off the shelf recording software available online.

I too hear the rhythmic knocking on wood when on a cell phone call.

It is not static. It is not clicking. I hear it when I'm talking regularly with the phone to my ear, on speaker, and on Bluetooth hearing aids. I get it talking to a different area code. I use T-Mobile. I get it talking via my iPhone SE 2022 to a Galaxy Android. I can hang up and call again and the problem will stop but may crank up again on that new call.

It seems to me to be a network problem. Only I can hear it and not the other party.

Weird that it sounds just like someone rapping/tapping on a wooden table.

Good luck with it.

If I can help you (Apple) in any way to investigate I will.

Here's a little more info. I tested it this evening. I hear it when: The other person is on speaker phone, I've been put on hold, the other person is in their car ( this might be another form of speaker phone), and there is a long pause in the conversation. Basically, the only time it isn't knocking is when I'm speaking directly with someone and there is an ongoing conversation with no gaps longer than about 10 seconds.

Hello All, checking in to see if anyone is still having this problem. I’m on an IPhone 13 Pro with T Mobile and the knocking is still happening. It’s been about a year now and no changes. It does not happen with android users or businesses or 1800 numbers or anything else. Just with friends not even with my own family who also have iPhones in t mobile.

How is everyone coping with this knocking sound? Have you switched providers? Do you spend less time on the phone now? Is it still happening?

follow below

1. Remove all screen protectors, films, or cases from your device.

2. Check the speaker opening to see if it's blocked or dirty. On iPhone only, make sure that the receiver isn't blocked or dirty.

3. If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure that the brush is clean and dry.

4. Go to Settings > Sounds (or Settings > Sounds & Haptics), and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider back and forth a few times. If you don't hear any sound, or if your speaker button on the Ringer and Alerts slider is dimmed, your speaker might need service.

5. If you hear sound, try making a call with your iPhone and turn on speakerphone. On iPad or iPod touch, make a FaceTime call. If you still can't hear, or hear static or crackling, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try to call again later, or from a different location.
