Knocking sound on iPhone calls

Why do you I hear a knocking on wood type of sound when I am on the phone with other iPhone users? Does anyone else have this problem? It is very annoying I tried iPhone reset and carrier and hardware and no luck

About a month since I switched to T-Mobile. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. It sounds like someone is knocking or lightly hammering something (tap, tap, tap, tap). It stops when someone talks, but if there’s any silence it happens consistently.

This happens to me all the time, sometimes it’s really loud sometimes softer, faster, slower, I hear it when using my speaker but my friend hears me go out on her end, but when she talks it stops but will start up again. It’s so annoying, I feel like I’m being spied on. Sooo extremely annoying. Id love a solution. I’m with T-Mobile and I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I purchased an iPhone 15 Pro and switched to T-Mobile in December 2023. I also hear a knocking/hammering sound in the background of my calls that the other person can't hear. This sound gives me a migraine and I need to end the calls. I have just signed up for a three year plan and if T-Mobile can't fix this I am going to need to break the contract because I can't use my phone?

Any updates on a fix? I am on the phone with them right now and they are telling me that they have never heard this issue, which is all over this chat and Reddit.

This is a carrier issue. Not a phone issue. I have a Google pixel 7 pro and use Google Fi . Which piggybacks multiple carriers. I hear it only sometimes which means it's a carrier issue. I used to work for a cellular construction company and t-mobile was one carrier that used a ton of sub contractors. Sometimes we'd have to go through 2 to 3 contractors to get paid but we were doing the work. So you get what you pay for. Don't put other contractors in line to pay other contractors it's a stupid practice and it only leads to shoddy work when a sub isn't paid on time or isn't given what they are owed. Which happens more than it should. Metro PCS was bad with this too. We did some AT&T work, cricket, clear channel, some microwave internet.. Verizon may also charge way too much, but they do all their work in house, so it's done well and correctly. At least it was 14 years ago when I was doing cellular construction, It changes so fast now it's hard to know and I haven't kept up. But I doubt t mobile has changed how they do their construction management.

Same thing happens to me on my iPhone 15 Pro. When I make a call sometimes I can hear the knocking noise as if someone is steadily hammering on the other side of the call. I also have T-Mobile as my carrier. It does seem to happen only when the other person has me on speaker phone, which is probably why on most calls its not an issue.

The solution I have found is to ask the other person to call me back. If I initiate the call I almost always hear the knocking, even if at a tolerably quiet level. However, if the other person initiates the call, I never hear the knocking. Hopefully this helps a few folks who are also experiencing this same problem!

I’m so glad I found this. I’m having issues with my neighbors or something because I keep hearing weird sounds around my house and people talking and seeing weird things through my security cameras. I was hit on the head with a rock one night. my neighbors hate me., that alone is enough but the knocking sound on my iPhone 12 Happened the first time when I was watching my security camera so I thought it was coming from that and that my neighbors were doing some thing to my house. The noise started happening randomly and it’s been about three months now it happened today when I was talking to my mom. I told my mom about it and I think she thinks I am hallucinating. It’s three Knocks and a long pause followed by three knocks. Over and over. it’s always the same. It sounds like someone’s hammering on wood. I have boost and no mental health issues. Lol.

I dont understand why people continue to try and swap phones out.

It's not the physical phone guys..And thats been stated over and over again on this thread here but I suspect due to the habit of "TL;DR" - people aren't reading all of the posts, so I continue to try and post here and there not to bother swapping the physical phones out. Besides a pain (even with backups) to restore the phone - it will not address anything here.

This will be fixed either when TMO addresses it and/or Apple releases an updated carrier patch.

We need someone on the inside @ TMO that is here in the USA and has a brain. Yea..good luck, right?

I wouldn't hold my breath for either to address this issue.

..they just fixed the type/text issue that has been plaguing us since early Nov 2023, so obviously there is no rush to fix even important things like that - much less something that doesn't affect EVERY iPhone owner based on their cell carrier.

I have iPhone 11 Pro Max with T-Mobile I have the same issue the knocking, perfect rhythm noise my boy friend thought I was cheating. 😂. He also has T mobile. You can only hear it on T-Mobile user ends. My bestfriend has Verizon she never hears it when I ask her as it is happening while we’re talking and the noise “tapping “ begins. T-Mobile customer service denies they know anything about it’s frustrating. But tech support was helpful with assisting me. I will update this post when I get a response.
