Airpods keep going into pairing mode

My airpods keep going into pairing mode every time I open them. They re-pair with my phone every time I want to use them (with the whole animation and everything) and even then half the time they will disconnect right away and I’ll have to do it again. They go into pairing mode automatically and flash white and then amber and then white again randomly. Any suggestions to keep them permanently assigned to my phone?
