Finder (Monterey os) on MacPro 2013 is corrupted or is my SSD bad.

2013 Mac Pro was running perfectly last week, and then over the course of 2-3 hours it completely flaked out. First file permissions changed and I couldn't move or delete files, open folders, etc on the desktop. Next Illustrator/Photoshop couldn't access the Preferences Folders.

Ran disk utility and then tried to change permissions but the OS said I didn't have sufficient priviledges. So I created a new admin, restarted, same thing. Performed the recommended Monterey OS X update, restarted and then it was much worse. It takes nearly 10 minutes for the mac to show the desktop after a restart and the finder is constantly unresponsive, folders and HD are hidden for up 15 minutes after restart. Most of the time it never shows the HD or the files on the desktop. Can't boot into safe mode. Used Terminal to delete FINDER PREFERENCES and no change. Booted into recovery mode and "reinstalled" Monterey 3 times, but each time I come back with the same thing. Also booted into recovery mode and ran disk utility on every container shown on the SSD but no luck (but disk utility also DIDN'T find any problems).

Is my SSD bad - my processor - or?

I did finally manage to save a report after a Spindump (took nearly 2 hours to make a single email and email the copy to myself, can't save anything to desktop). I can post that if it helps - its all greek to me. (

Hello Ghosttx,

We understand you have some possible hardware issues with your Mac Pro 2013 and have worked through quite a bit of troubleshooting already. We first want to confirm that you still are not able to boot your Mac Pro to a regular desktop, is that correct?

If you still aren't able to get it operating as expected or the macOS reinstalled, you may want to have it looked at a diagnosed in a service location. Keep in mind that due to the age of your system, there may be limits on what they can do for it, especially if the issue is determined to be hardware related.

Here's how to locate service near you: Find Locations

All the best.

Run Disk Utility First Aid on the hidden Container. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" so the physical SSD appears on the left pane of Disk Utility. Even if First Aid says everything is "Ok", click "Show Details" and scroll back through the report to see if any unfixed errors are listed. If there are any unfixed errors listed, then you will need to perform a clean install of macOS by first erasing the whole physical SSD before restoring from a backup.

Do you have a spare USB3 external drive? If so, then install macOS to the external USB3 drive and boot from it to see if you have the same issues. If you have the same issues, then most likely you have a hardware issue with the laptop (probably not the SSD, but would require more testing). If you boot from an external macOS drive, then you can check the health of the internal SSD using DriveDx (post the complete DriveDx text report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper...I've given you the direct download link since the download button on the DriveDx homepage is no longer working).

If you don't have a spare external drive to use for a macOS install, then I can provide you with instructions for creating & using a bootable Linux USB stick to check the health of the internal SSD. This will also allow you to see how the laptop behaves as well which can provide useful information in & of itself.
