iPhone 13 doesn't respond to long touch, does respond to other touches

Trying to change my wallpaper at the log on, and sometimes doing other things, requires a "long touch." My iPhone 13 (iOS 16.4) does not consistently respond to my placing my finger on the screen for several seconds without moving my finger. It either turns off (if at the log on process) or does nothing. If I'm not doing a "long press," the screen responds to my finger movements or taps just fine.

Is there some setting that needs to be adjusted? Is there a sweet spot on the screen that I should be touching?

I am NOT using facial recognition or other forms of log in. For a normal log in, I press the power button, swipe up and enter my passcode.

Why is my phone not responding to long touches?

iPhone 13 Pro Max, iOS 16

Hi Moxieman99,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you may have Touch Accommodations enabled for a Hold Duration and also Tap Assistance. You can see whether you have these options enabled in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations. Scroll down to Hold Durations and Tap Assistance.

You can find these details and how they work in Use Touch Accommodations with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch - Apple Support.

Regards.

Hi Moxieman99,

Looking at your description of when you're using the long press, we have some information to share.

We don't want to be pressing the screen when the iPhone is starting up or logging in, as this process needs to be completed first.

We see you viewed Change the wallpaper on your iPhone - Apple Support

Since this section "Change your wallpaper from the Lock Screen" shows that Face ID needs to be set up, this could be why this method is not working for you.

Instead try the steps in the first section:

Add a new wallpaper for your Lock Screen or Home Screen
1. In the Settings app, tap Wallpaper.
2. Tap Add New Wallpaper.
3. Tap Photos, People, or Photo Shuffle to choose your own photo. You can also select a wallpaper from a category like Weather & Astronomy, Emoji, Collections, or Color.
4. If you want, you can customize your wallpaper further. Then tap Add.

To verify if your display is working with a long press, try testing the steps on this page:

Organize the Home Screen and App Library on your iPhone - Apple Support

Let us know if you aren't able to do the long press, and we can move forward with next steps.

Cheers.

Ah, I need to clarify. I was/am doing the long press at start up because that is the only way to remove photos from the wallpaper selections (getting the red trash can and all that). Long press before logging in is the only way to do that. The problem is, long pressing (either before logging in or at any other time) works only sporadically. I cannot make the long press work every time I try it.

So I need to find out if there is a sweet spot on the screen that I don't know about, or if there is something wrong with the screen or hardware, or what. Regular touches to start an app or go to a different screen -- those all work fine. The problem is long touch.
