Mac OS Ventura update on old MacBook Air and Microsoft Office 16.71 compatibility?

My MacBook Air is quite old but works perfectly well. It's a 2012 version.

It doesn't look like I will be able to update my Mac to Mac OS Ventura?

If I can't and have to continue with Mac OS Catalina will the latest Microsoft Office 365 downloads work

Earlier Mac models

Microsoft will only allow you to install the current Microsoft 365 or Office 2019/2021 for Mac products in Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura. They follow Apple's current operating system and two previous releases for support, and Catalina dropped off that list in Fall 2022.

Your options that are compatible with your Microsoft documents on Catalina:

  1. SoftMaker's Office 2021 for Mac, free trial, paid and subscription models, product support
  2. LibreOffice Suite, free, learning curve with PDF documentation support.

If you subscribe to Microsoft 365, have a look at this link. I downloaded and installed the file that contains Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Outlook, and they work just fine. As far as I can see, the only drawback is that Microsoft keeps telling me that updates are available, presumably for updated versions of the apps which, of course, do not work on Catalina.

Whether you stick with Apple or not is your choice. The Softmaker Office product I mentioned earlier runs on Linux and Windows too. Presently, it is supported from High Sierra to Ventura on Macs.

Apple has had a three-year support cycle with macOS for years. Apple does not make Microsoft's internal business decisions regarding which operating systems they choose to support or block for new installations. Seems like the limiting factor here is Microsoft and not Apple.

As you say, VikingOSX, it is a choice and it is not a perfect one because, as you point out, the Microsoft apps will not be supported on Catalina. However, for those who have an old but working Mac that cannot be upgraded beyond Catalina, the choices include starting up the learning curve of an open-source office suite, spending over £1000/$1250 for a new Mac or living with unsupported but still serviceable Microsoft apps.
