Does anyone have intermittent problems with the Draw Mask tool?

Yesterday I was doing some green screen work with my grandson and needed to draw a mask round the screen.

However, when I dropped the Draw Mask effect onto the clip the cursor did not change into a pen icon even though everything was selected correctly.

I trashed the preferences and everything worked well . . . for a short while . . . and then it stopped working.

I have since discovered that trashing the preferences is not necessary as simply shutting down and relaunching FCP X is all that is needed.

Now before anyone suggests there is something wrong with my iMac etc. let me add that the last time this happened was over 3 years ago (when I first used the Draw Mask) and since then the iMac has been wiped and a new OS and version of FCP X installed.

So from my limited experience there appears to be some instability with the Draw Mask in different versions of FCP X.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

EDIT: I have just found my original problem from November 2019.

I think I have found the solution to the intermittent problem that has bugged me for over 3 years and the problem as is so often the case is USER ERROR ! 🙁

If you look in the Inspector you will see that I have got everything set up correctly but if you look in the Viewer you will spot that the Transform tools are visible and active.

Once I click "Done" they all disappear and the Draw Mask pen tool becomes visible and active.

Such a simple mistake that has plagued me for so long! (At least I hope that is all that has been causing it).
