I would like to know what exif data is used by Photos App for sorting when a photo is imported. I am importing some scanned photos and I want to adjust this data before performing the import.
Mac mini, macOS 10.13
My scanner does not add exif data, but Exiftool does. I want to know which exif data is used by the Photos Application to sort the imported photos into newest or oldest so I can add the necessary date/time for proper sort before I import.

Photos uses the EXIF capture date or the file creation date in case of scanned files or files without an EXIF creation date.
Date and time created.
It depends on which view within the library you're using. This screenshot shows the sort options for the various views:
Does your scanner create files with exif included? Most don't. You might find it easier to add this data with Photos, after import.
