Adding Mail account from Hostgator

My new email with Hostgator is working fine online (their Roundcube portal) but I can't seem to get it connected to Apple Mail. I get "unable to verify account name or password" in the Add Account dialog. Double and triple checked the portal info from their email. The agent there just said "sorry, I work in Windows...." and "we don't support third-party email systems." Then she sent me the settings email, which isn't all that helpful other than having the port info. Sigh.

Any ideas on this, friends?

"not supporting" doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't work, just that they can't help you.

Indeed, Hostgator appear to have a support page that describes setting up a Mac Mail client:

https://www.hostgator.com/help/article/mac-mail-setup

I assume you've followed that?

IF the site uses standard internet protocols for mail (such as SMTP and IMAP), then there's little reason why it wouldn't work. However, if they only offer a web portal or a custom app, then there may be issues.

Their page implies there may be issues with the SSL certificates, so you may need to jump through some hoops before Mail.app will trust the site.

As written, there isn't enough in the post to be able to advise further. Knowing the specific error message you get might help narrow down what you need to do.

Did you mean to reply to the OP and not me?

If they don't support 3rd party apps, then you can't install it with Apple mail.

I've talked to three different support agents at Hostgator and all of them tell me the same thing, have me open a private Safari window so there's no issue with cache, and yet, it's still the same. The last tech changed my password on my webmail even though I told them I kept getting and error message about every minute or two on the WEB mail (if that isn't working then why should I expect to be able to connect any other way?). This is a new website and I just can't seem to get it working. Is this a sign?? lol

And yes, I've followed all of what's in there...except some of what's in there isn't in the Apple Mail "add account" dialogs anymore.

The address is IMAP. We also tried POP but got the same result.
