Help me pick an iMac

Hey everyone,

Newbie here - looking to replace my 2013 iMac that needs a replacement SSD.

My usage needs are relatively basic - Microsoft Word, browsing the internet, Youtube, nothing particularly intensive (have a work laptop for all the rest).

Hoping to get your thoughts on which of the two models I should get:

(1) Apple iMac 21.5" (MHK03LL/A) Intel Core i5 2.3GHz/256GB SSD / 8gB RAM / Intel Iris Plus Graphics 540; 2017 model $699.99 CAD

(2) Apple iMac 21.5" (MHK23LL/A) Intel Core i3 3.6GHz/ 256GB SSD / 8GB RAM / AMD Radeon Pro 555X Graphics - refurbished (1 year warranty); early 2019 model $699.99 CAD

Many thanks!

if you do not already have it available, budget for a 4 to 6 TB hard disk drive for Time Machine for backups, and for an AirPrint-capable printer if you need that.

I would not suggest an 8 GB configuration. Recent macOS versions exceed that. Both of those Intel processors will be wasted waiting for 8 GB. Go for 16 GB.

Seriously consider a larger SSD. usage (macOS and apps and our data) is not getting any smaller.

2017 is the oldest iMac supported for macOS Ventura, and will probably be the next to drop off support.

If you want or need a cheap Mac, a refurb Mac mini (preferably one with 16 GB, and a bigger SSD) and an external display may be cheaper approach.

Hi there!

I'd recommend buying from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller, and advise against buying from an unauthorized reseller. When you buy from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller, the products are backed by a one-year Apple warranty with the option of adding AppleCare+.
