Transferring images from i-phone to MacBook

I'm on Big Sur 11.7.4 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015).

I want to connect my i-phone SE as if it was a normal USB drive, to transfer photographs across to my MacBook.

I have no time for i-cloud, since everything I had there disappeared a few years ago, and I don't want to use Photos for similar reasons.

I just want to transfer the images stored on my phone, as JPGs if poss, so I can store and manipulate them in non-Apple spaces and software.

I am told I need iTunes to do this, but when I look to download it, I'm told it is no longer available.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

The way I do this is to use Airdrop. The image files will be placed into the Downloads folder in Big Sur from were you can move them to where you want them.
