I love the idea of this charger but whenever I use it with my watch, it drains the power from the iPhone. This is the second one I've gotten and it happened with both of them. I'm using a 30W power adapter. Do I need to use a higher wattage, maybe?

The wattage of the adapter shouldn't be an issue since it's 30W. And since you had this issue with a different MagSafe Duo charger, I suspect that it might be the iPhone that has the issue.

This is not expected behavior. Take a look on the following support article "How to use MagSafe Duo Charger with your iPhone and Apple Watch".
Could you also provide more details, are you using an Apple branded or MFi certified USB-A/C to Lighting cable ?
Is the power adapter Apple branded and if so, what's the model number (e.g. AXXXX) ?
Thanks! I certainly didn't expect this behavior. All 3 components (charger, cord and power adapter) are Apple-branded. The model number of the power adapter is A2164.
