Optimise space leaves very little free space on MacBook Air 128gb

Is there a way to get the MacBook Air to optimise storage a bit more efficiently. I've a 128 GB MBA and it only ever leaves me a very small amount of free space. At the moment I've only got 350 MB of free space. I wanted to download the new operating system (I'm currently using Big Sur). But I only ever get a spinning dial when I try to do so. I'm also tired of the computer running so slowly. I think it is a storage issue.

Follow these instructions to free up storage space on your Mac: Free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support

You have a Mac with 128GB storage. This is the bottom of the line Mac. Depending on your use, you may need to get a Mac with more storage space to improve performance.
