Authentication Required Message

Until today I've been using Apple Mail to send messages from my wife's Virginmedia email account but today a message refused to send with an Authentication Required (VM401) message. What does this mean?

Parallels, macOS 10.14

Hi RobbieSnr,

From what we were able to find it looks like this might be an issue with the outgoing mail server.

There's a similar thread here on the Virgin Media site:

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Cannot-send-emails/td-p/5028409

This might happen if you recently changed your password on the email account or they've changed the server settings. This could also happen due to a connection issue, so you'll want to disable any recently installed VPN or security software and test again.

Try using the steps here, including running the Connection Doctor:

If you can’t send emails in Mail on Mac

That should help you get these emails sent.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

I'm getting through to the outgoing email server OK. I've been in touch with VM and they're trying to find out what the problem is. The password I use for this email account is an old one that wouldn't satisfy their current password requirements and I suspect that this has something to do with the problem. I'll report back once I hear further from VM.
