Studio Display not working with PC after 16.4 firmware update.

I've used my Studio Display with my PC work laptop, running Fedora 36, for about 12 months over USB-C. However, after installing the 16.4 software update over the weekend, the display no longer works with my work laptop (although it still works with my Mac).


My laptop recognises the Studio Display as a USB device (`lsusb` lists the Studio Display and its USB Hub as connected devices) but doesn't use it as a display. The Studio Display is blank while it's plugged into the laptop.


I've tried:

  • Unplugging the Studio Display from power for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.
  • Using multiple different USB-C cables, which each worked until I installed the new software update.


Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to rollback the software update?

The article clearly names the Apple spokesperson who provided that information to the reporter. I suggest reading it before accusing people of breaking the community rules. :)

Or, it means that I would start by assuming this is a bug, and not try to chase off customers from asking the community for help and then casting doubt on Apple's public statements when it's pointed out there is conflicting information and statements from Apple that it is intended to work with PCs (You think Apple wouldn't correct a major tech news outlet publishing misinformation about their products after talking to Apple? That seems far-fetched to me but to each their own). It's coming across like you have a very specific agenda here that isn't related to offering helpful support. I'm very confused by the argumentative replies in general.


To the original poster: our approach has been to reach out to support and also submitting a bug report. I encourage you to do the same. We're hopeful Apple will resolve the issue soon!

In my case, the USB-hub, speakers, webcam, and microphone still work. Only the display's stopped working. As I mentioned in my original post, the Studio Display continues to work as expected with my Mac.


I've attached the output of `dmesg` when I connect the Studio Display to my laptop via USB-C. My laptop detects two devices -- the USB2 Hub and the Studio Display -- but it does not recognise a display.

It's interesting to see that several other people have had a similar experience. I suspect this was an unintended consequence of the 16.4 update. I hope that Apple redresses this issue in the future. In the meantime, I'll be using my laptop's tiny built-in display for work...

This is incorrect. Apple explicitly confirmed to the Verge that it is supposed to work with PCs (though Apple-specific features are not available):

Our household has this problem as well: one of us is a PC user, one is a Mac user, and we both have a Studio Display. The Studio Display turned into a $2k paperweight overnight. The PC user understandably feels hoodwinked and frustrated by Apple, so I don't think "go to a non-Apple forum" is an appropriate reply here: this is an Apple customer service problem with an Apple product that is not working as designed or advertised.


If you look at the firmware update notes (16.4) this is a display calibration and security exploit update, so I do not think Apple "solved it" (it = PC usage) intentionally. See: What’s new in firmware updates for Apple Studio Display - Apple Support


Hoping Apple responds or issues a fix soon. This is a great and beautiful monitor for PC users also. At minimum I think they'd have to refund PC users but we'd love to keep using it in our house.

That doesn’t mean anything…anyone can quote anyone and put it on their website for ad-revenue clicks. Furthermore “spokesperson” is not the go-to person for technical questions, the Apple spec and their support organization is.


If indeed Verge is/was quoting from this Apple fella, they asked the wrong guy and probably goaded him to say something that could be misreported. Or worse, made it all up. Both are possible sadly, that is how many so-called news sites work.


Be reminded again that pasting unreliable information from external sites to this community claiming it to be fact is against the rules (which you’re already aware of).


I’m sorry you feel let down - you can use Feedback - Displays - Apple. You can also protest to Verge for their fake reporting/rumor-mongering. There is no other recourse, unfortunately. Good luck anyways!

“Should” “supposed” etc. from a link over a year old = not a confirmation (assuming Verge is to be relied upon which I don’t think it is, definitely not for a $4K+ purchase). It is speculation which please be reminded, is against community rules.


At any rate, Verge is not the last word on this, the Apple spec is.

I sympathize with your predicament and understand your confusion. In future, don’t count of flaky Verge alone for information, have it verified by cross-checking it with Apple product documentation and by visiting an Apple Store. And don’t argue with Apple store sales associates about conflicting information from Verge. They wouldn’t have a clue who they are😂. All the best!

No, as explained already, the unintended consequence was the display working in the first place when it was never meant to. That has now been fixed. USB support which includes the USB-hub, speakers, webcam, and microphone is not affected and won’t be in future either. However, don’t hold breath for the display coming back, it’s a hole that Apple appears to have plugged permanently by design, not accident.
