The watch can automatically place a call to emergency services in case of a fall, if it detects no movement after the fall.

For all other situations, placing an emergency call is just a matter of holding down the side button and tapping on "Emergency Call" on the screen.

Apple watch requires an iPhone to set up and use. If the elderly person does not have an iPhone, you can use Family Setup to set it up through your own iPhone, but in that case it needs to be a cellular Apple Watch, and will not have access to certain features.

It should not be too hard if she is willing to learn. The button on the side has many functions, one of which is to initiate the SOS call when held down as explained above.

There's also the option of just asking Siri (the digital assistant) to Initiate the emergency call, by just saying into the watch, "Hey Siri, call 911" for instance.

Hi many thanks for that. Would you know how easy the 8is to use for someone elderly and also is the button on the side for making the sos call. I very much appreciate you taking the time to reply. Thanks again.

There are a number of regulars in this forum who are in their eighties who happily use Apple Watches. And, there are also younger people who have trouble with them. The issue isn't so much age as a willingness and interest in learning new things. Gender also doesn't matter.

It sounds as if you are not the person in their eighties. If you are not, the first thing you should do is discuss this with the person you're thinking of getting the watch for. Do they have an iPhone? Are they interested in learning how to use a new device? Whatever you do, don't foist something like this on them without asking.

If you ascertain that all the requirements are met and the person is interested in having an Apple Watch, make sure you buy it from Apple or an Authorized Apple Reseller. This will generally give you at least 14 days to return it if it doesn't work out.

Hello many thanks for the quick reply, Your correct it isn’t for me it is for my neighbour, she is very switched on and use her iPad with ease.

Does she have an iPhone? The Apple Watch is not a standalone device. It has to be connected to an iPhone.

She enquired about the watch because she doesn’t like her home personal alarm and has looked into getting something a little easier! ie she looked at the Apple ultra but after discussing the watch the 8 is smaller and some of the functions are not required.

Yes, I agree that the Ultra is overkill for this situation. It's wonderful but it's huge and expensive. The Series 8 would be much more cost effective as well as lighter.
