what if I can't update my iTunes to restore my iPad?
every time I try to install a newly updated iTunes, I'm told I don't have enough disk space. although I don't have much on this laptop, I've deleted what I can and emptied the trash bin.

You can use the Apple icon > About This Mac to confirm what operating system is installed. iTunes was replaced in macOS 10.15 Catalina and later by Music. Sync and restore duties were moved into Finder. iTunes cannot be installed on these newer operating systems.

I can’t tell which one I have all I know is that it wants me to upgrade to
macOS Monterey
so which ever version before that
