FIX for low Nano volume with Airpods...anyone need this?

Anyone still have a Nano? Low volume issue with Airpods? FIXED. Step-by-step procedure, takes about 30 seconds with practice; proven, works, repeated and tested. May have to be done every time before use; still trying out different ways to start and stop. But great for audiobooks or an hour in the gym. Also, this MAY only work with Gen 1 Airpods paired with Nano, not Gen 2 or Pro. I've read that if you EVER pair a Nano with a Gen 2, it resets the volume limit and creates a low, useless volume with the Airpod. Apple support on this--none I've seen. So I've been dealing this with for a while, but love the Nano too much to quit trying to fix the volume issue. I put the Nano into an iron-on pocket of my baseball cap and then jog with Airpods. Full volume.

Follow these steps in the EXACT order. Do NOT be near any other Apple phone or device unless their bluetooth is OFF; nothing plugged in to the Nano.

  1. Pair Nano and Airpods normally. They will be at extreme low volume.
  2. In Settings, press button to turn OFF bluetooth with Airpods connected--WAIT for them to disconnect on their own; then PUT IN CASE.
  3. HOLD DOWN both the Sleep/Wake and HOME buttons until the Apple logo appears, goes away, then comes back that least THREE times. On the third time the Nano will stay on the main menu screen with icons. Release buttons.
  4. Go to music/audiobook icon; select something to play.
  5. >>MOVE the volume slider to about 1/4th volume<<<<
  6. Take Airpods out of case, put in ears. [bluetooth MUST show OFF. If not, best to start over]
  7. Go to SETTINGS.
  8. >>Within about TWO SECONDS, do the next 5 button pushes firmly and quickly<<<<(takes practice)
  9. >>Select BLUETOOTH>>select "ON" >>press Sleep/Wake TWICE >>press "PLAY"
  10. You will be on the play screen for your music or audiobook. You won't hear anything, but the volume slider will at at 1/4 and >>>note the tiny bluetooth icon will appear in the upper left corner, then within seconds Aipods will connect and another blue icon will show near the volume slider. They will be high volume, even with the volume slider set low. Use caution: they are going to be very robust!!

So that's it. If you are a Nano fan, this will take you back to the normal, useful volume for music or audiobooks. There may be shortcuts to this method, but when the Airpods go back in the case, the low volume comes back from what I can tell. With practice, it's worth the 30 seconds to me to fix the volume issue.

Enjoy!

This is adding an EDIT to my post. Resetting the Nano to show OFF on bluetooth MUST happen. I have found that sometimes, like if I use the Airpods on another device, the Nano will not set to OFF after reset, even with the Apple logo showing up and going away four times. Fix for this is to just "forget" the Airpod, then immediately re-pair, using the case, and start over. Play something at low volume, pick up at step 2. Again, this procedure is 100% effective to restore Gen 1 to Nano at full volume, not sure about other combos. After the reset, Step 3, check with setting and make SURE bluetooth is OFF. Not every time, just if the first go does not work. I have found the best plan is to just keep one Nano and one Airpod always together, don't mix them up with other devices or headphones. If I try this with my Gen 2 Airpods, I'll re-post. Gen 1 Airpods are still available as replacements from Apple for $155 like to replace batteries. BTW. Again, 30 seconds with practice, works every time. Enjoy.
