Photos is showing you the sort order for each predefined album, when you select the album in the sidebar and go to the menu "View > Sort". For "Recents" and "imports" it is showing, dimmed, "Keep sorted by oldest date added". But the "Date added" will depend on the order the photos have been processed and the Settings on the iPhone. For example, if you have set the iPhone to take the photos in the HEIC format, but convert the image files to JPEGs when downloading, the download speed may depend on the time it takes to convert the image files or the file size. The "All Photos" album should be showing the newest photos directly at the bottom of the album, sorted by "Keep sorted by oldest Capture date". The capture date will not depend on the timimg of the import.

Thanks for quick reply. I plug m’y iPhone to my Mac and follow instructions “import all new items” but seems pictures are from not latest one but from various dates , am very puzzled and can take for ever and after a while it hang , some what frustrating! :((

Older items may be reimported again as new photos for several reasons:

  • if the photo is still on the iPhone but has been removed from your Mac.
  • Or, if the version on the iPhone has been changed. This can happen, if you are having iCloud Photos enabled on your iPhone. Then the file creation date of the photo may change again and again, whenever Photos is downloading the file again from iCloud.
  • Or, if your iPhone is shooting the photos in the space saving high efficiency format and you are importing the photos converted to JPEG. Then the imported items will be different from the versions remaining on the iPhone and will always appear as new items.

I would not use the manual import from the iPhone, if the iPhone is syncing with iCloud, but download the new photos directly from iCloud. And avoid any format conversion when downloading. Otherwise the duplicate detection will not be able to to recognize older photos as already imported.

Are you downloading with the Photos.app on your Mac?

The order of the photos in Photos will depend on the album where you are viewing them. Each of the predefined albums is having a fixed sort order, specific for the album.

  • In the "Imports" album you will be seeing the photos sorted by the Imports session. The sequence within the Import session may depend on the file size and the time it took to download the file.
  • In the Recents album you are seeing the photos sorted by the time you have recently used them or the time they have been added to the library. This sorting can change after a system update or when Photos is rebuilding the library for other reasons.
  • In the "All Photos" album or the days, months, years the photos will be sorted by the capture date.
  • In any album you create yourself, you can sort the photos freely, by the title or the date taken.

Are you saying, that the sorting by the capture date is wrong in the All Photos album?
