Bluetooth connection lost

I have an old (circa 2009) Apple wireless keyboard from a long dead iMac. Recently purchased a Mac mini and when setting up it recognized the keyboard but batteries died today and after recharging they no longer connect. Now using keyboard with my iPad so no problem with that Bluetooth connection. Assume mini's Bluetooth off as no connection and can't logon. Keyboard 100% wireless, no port for cable. Suggestions?
