I recently got a MacBook and want some basic word processing and photo editing programs that I can use on it when not connected to the Web. Any suggestions?

apple have their free ones called pages, numbers and keynotes
or you can get the free libreoffice which aim to be more like microsoft office
photo editor then the free app called gimp is pretty good

You will at some point need to connect to the web to download the recommended apps given here. Perhaps a library or other public Internet Cafe? Copy to thumb drives and then bring home to install using the thumb drive in your USB slot. I too highly recommend LibreOffice and Gimp. That is if you don't want to use Pages, Numbers, and Keynotes.
