When you update/upgrade a Mac, it is the operating system and Apple applications that are affected. It does not touch your user data, though it is wise to have a current Time Machine backup before you start as a precaution.

As VikingOSX stated the data volume is your part. It contains all your files and pers. settings. The OS update you cannot access and is controlled by Apple. When you update the OS it does not touch your pers. data.
