Use iPhone as camera only to save battery
I am going on 5 day sea trip. I have stopped using my old camera and don’t want to take it. How should I set my iPhone 12 to preserve the battery purely for the phone?
Many thanks.

Put the phone in Airplane mode, and don’t keep the camera open, because it uses a lot of power when open. Open it, take a photo, and close it. And follow JNoel54’s advice, get an external battery pack if you don’t have any other way to charge it. And NOT an Apple MagSafe battery; it’s capacity is not sufficient. Get a high capacity one, at least 10,000 MaH, and preferably 20,000 MaH.

Might be helpful to have more than one. I’ve had a few quit early and even one fail quickly, I’ve got an 8000 mAH one that fits in my pocket and that I can comfortably use with my iPhone with short cable where I can hold both in the same hand. The 20,000 mAh one is heavy and might be useful for charging overnight or in a bag connected with a longer cable.
There are often quirks, like that many of these disconnect after a while unless the user presses a button periodically. Or many with a single multifunction button where it doesn’t start providing power unless the button is oressed,
Your questions seem to be contradictory. Do you want to save the battery for the camera use or for the phone? I’m guessing you mean you would like it to be minimally drawing power so as to save it for taking photos.
If that’s the case, I suppose you could turn off the Wi-Fi, turn off Bluetooth, and remove the SIM card or can you disable with eSIM? And the suggestion to use an external battery was sensible

I don’t want to take the SIM card out on the boat incase I loose it. If I put on airplane mode do I need to do anything else eg stop roaming? I understand not to keep the Camera app open but should I power off as well?
thanks so much.
I was thinking that because it might start searching for cellular towers, and that uses a bit of power - especially when it can’t find one. But someone mentioned putting it in airplane mode, which turns off cellular communications. But definitely turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which both draw power.
Certainly power it off at night if you have no way to charge it. Will you have any way to charge it?
Have you considered getting an external battery pack to keep it charged?
