Video cutting out on Apple TV Box

When watching HBOMax, Prime or AppleTV+, my device cuts out frequently. Screen goes to black for a few seconds, then comes back on. Audio is not effected. Sometimes, I have to press play button again on remote to restart the video. The video does not lose its place but I may miss a few seconds of the video, while hearing everything perfectly. Cables are fine, internet working well everywhere else in my house. Tried restarting, but that didn’t help. Device software is up to date.

As the video signal seems to be affected, I would suggest to use the Reset Video Settings options, and then try again. Make additional changes for optimization or customization as needed, but test after each change and watch for the “cutouts”.

When you have the Match Content settings on, then short cutouts are expected when the TV need some time to adjust to changes in frame rate and dynamic range. Not during a show, but in between shows (or ad transitions). The very latest high end TV models should be able to do this adjustment very fast (new feature).

After doing the Settings > Video and Audio > Reset Video Settings... did you by any chance turn "Match Content" ON again? Apple's default settings are to configure vidio output to match the best resolution, frame rate and colorspace that your TV can handle, and leave it there. When Match Content is "Off", the TV is frequently forced to change video modes and most TVs go dark for a few seconds as it adapts to the new content's format.

Update your Apple TV system software to the current version, if not done already. How to update your Apple TV - Apple Support

Try this for any misbehaving app:

  1. Force-quit the app, then relaunch and try again.
  2. If the issue persists, force-quit the app, restart the device, then relaunch and try again.
  3. If the issue still persists, delete the app, re-download and try again.
  4. If the issue still persists, then contact the app developer for further assistance.

I believe I have a similar issue. When watching The History Channel App and the Mountain Man series on my current gen. Apple TV 4K when I move to each next episode the sound keeps playing and progresses normally but the pictures goes black with the buffering rotating icon showing. The only way thus far that I can get the video showing is to pull the power cord on the Apple TV 4K and then plug power back in. The Apple TV goes back to the Home Screen and I have to select the History Channel App again and then select Play on the right episode. I wish I could find an easier solution.

I did delete the HISTORY App from my Apple TV 4K and reload it but still had the same issue with no video and the spinning icon whenever I tried to go to the next episode. Finally though I found something easier than unplugging my Apple TV 4K Device to get the next episode to play correctly. I don’t know if there are other remedies or not but what worked was “marking as watched” the previous episode and then selecting the subsequent episode. There must be an issue with data being retained during/after watching each episode. All my other Apple TV Apps work just fine, so it is unique to the HISTORY Channel.

By the way, this issue may only occur when watching Series 11 of Mountain Men (current series) where as that series doesn’t even show up unless you are a subscriber. I subscribe via my Spectrum Provider. There must be some handshaking going on between HISTORY and Spectrum within the App.
