Zoom freezes on MacBook M1 Pro, running 13.3.1

I am running a MacBook M1 Pro, running 13.3.1, recently purchased (last fall) and I am running into a problem with Zoom and no other program. I will be in a conference and Zoom will freeze and eventually bounce me out and run a reconnection. I have tried to reinstall the Zoom program, but that doesn't resolve the problem. I don't know if this is a wi-fi connection issue or something else. Do I just need another laptop? Any suggestions for diagnosis.

I use Zoom on an M1 Mac with only occasional problems. I’ve traced freezing or stuttering during a meeting to a slow Wi-Fi connection, so as a troubleshooting step try checking your Internet connection speed with the speedtest app, speedtest.net, or fast.com (or your favorite speed testing app).

Another possibility is available memory. Just before starting Zoom launch the Activity Monitor, click on Memory, and make sure Memory Pressure is in the green, and stays there after you start Zoom. If it isn’t restart your Mac and launch only Zoom.

I have an M1 MBP, and do not have zoom problems, except when my network connection is slow. So I doubt the problem is the fact that you have an M1 and your wife an Intel Mac. Unless you both run identical apps and have identical memory configurations you can’t really compare the performance between them.

Did you check the Internet speed on both Macs, and also the memory pressure? If the memory pressure graph shows yellow that means there isn’t enough free “real” memory available, so the Mac OS virtual memory manager swaps apps in and out of memory dynamically, which will cause brief interruptions to the running apps and can account for stuttering.

From the Zoom Support Community: (Until Safari works, perhaps try it with Firefox or a different browser). It is not recommended to use Chrome for Ventura at all.

Zoom Community Info:

Critical additional information:

  • If you try to start Zoom directly to start your own meeting, it freezes (shows Not Responding in the Force Quit screen).
  • If you click the link in an e-mail invite,
    • If your default browser is Safari, then it will freeze,
    • If your default browser is Chrome, then it works.
  • If you copy/paste the link in the e-mail invite, it works if pasted into Chrome, does not work in Safari.

Thanks, jeffreythefrog,

you're welcome.

It all makes me wonder if there is a Ventura issue, possibly with wi-fi?

maybe not a Ventura issue. mine works fine with Ventura. but I'm kind of leaning towards it being an M1 related issue. especially since it is also working on your wife's intel Mac.

have you tried contacting Zoom Support to see if they have an answer?

I agree that it is likely the internet service and possibly the memory.

I use Zoom on an M1 Mac mini without any issues whatsoever. I have used it for over an hour at a time without even a stutter. My internet service is close to 100 Mbps.

I have a Macbook Pro on Ventura 13.4.1 and running latest version of Zoom. I have had serious problems for months and am so fed up! I get "network unstable" error, which then freezes and often dumps me off, then spins and returns me back to the meeting. I have called Comcast, they upgraded us to a business account for way more money but it's still happening. They say it's not a network issue. We have tried installing, re-installing and we can't figure it out. SO FRUSTRATING. Only a problem with Zoom. When I run a network connection its' screaming at 500mb and 27mb upload.

Thanks for the info but this doesn't really describe my issue. The Zoom app opens fine and the meeting starts, but will freeze at random intervals. Sometimes it just stutters (I can tell by listening to the audio), but most commonly recently it freezes for a time then bounces me out of the meeting while it reconnects. It used to happen just once or twice during a meeting, but recently has taken to freeze/restart up to 9 times in an hours time. Unless what you are saying is that the app actually opens in the browser window?

Thanks, Lawrence, but I'm not sure either of your suggestions point to the culprit. My wife is on the same internet connection as I am and suffers no stuttering or freezing and her Mac has the exact same memory configuration as my MacBook. The only difference I can easily point to is her Mac is an Intel processor running Monterey. But thanks for the ideas.

Just tried Zoom conference last night and it started with a freeze just three minutes in. Memory pressure was solid green throughout and internet connection was 45 to 50 download and about 15 upload. Tried connecting on my wife's MacBook Air with Intel processor and had one or two stutters but no freezes. Memory doesn't seem to be an issue; what would be the recommended internet speed test, in your opinion, since 50 doesn't seem to be enough for my connection?
