Close Multiple Mails at one time in Apple Mail

How can I CLOSE (not DELETE) all open emails at the same time, i.e. without having to close each individual one - in Apple Mail. Even if I quit Mail (without closing all open emails) hoping to reset it, when I reopen Mail, all the old open mails also open again.
