Safari background changed after update

Try changing the the Safari start page background image using these steps: Customize a start page in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

1. "In the Safari app  on your Mac, choose Bookmarks > Show Start Page.
2. Click the Options button  in the bottom-right corner of the window.
3. Select options for your start page."

You should see an option for Background Image.

My iMac M1 is 6 months old and I know how to customize the background. After the last update, anytime when I close Safari, the background goes to white. I changed it again as I wished, closed Safari and again nothing.
