I MISS Pages ‘09 with its excellent graphics capabilities and ability to work with MathType. Using LaTex just isn’t acceptable. What have y’all done? Are we doomed to use MS Office? Can I move my 2014 Mac Mini back to an OS that would use Pages ‘09 and MathType? How would I do that?

Maybe Overleaf can generate MathML for content unsupported in LaTeX by the equation editor.

I don't do much MathType and it would be a very deep time consuming dive to attempt to produce your preferred output. It could be done in a Pages table though with a 2pt line and 12pt Helvetica bold font. Column A is 0.55 in wide and B - D are .0.94 in wide.

I used to make these with the matrix tool in Equation Editor, putting a vertical line between the first two columns and a horizontal line between the two rows.
Yes, I was able to accomplish something like that with a table. I used Times New Roman in italic for x and y and it's satisfactory.

For anyone else following this, MathType IS available through Google Docs as a subscription, but for writing tests I find the 'intelligent' formatting in Google Docs to be both unintelligible and quite maddening. I spend more time trying to un- and re-format than I do composing.
As Viking suggested in a previous comment, this web page is a quick way to get code to copy into the Pages equation editor.
You can use the following either before or after the number to receive a raised (exponent) minus symbol:

There is a TeX package named Cancel (e.g \usepackage[makeroom]{cancel} but the Pages equation editor does not support installation of TeX packages, so you cannot do this:

Fuzzy because it's greatly enlarged. I made these many times in MathType using a matrix where I could put a vertical line between columns and a horizontal line between rows.
