Can and how is this corrected?

What year model is the iMac?

The iMac's HDD has/had a built-in thermal sensor that the SMC uses to control the HDD fan speed. When you replace the HDD, you also need to replace the SATA cable with the one that has a built-in digital thermal sensor.
