I just purchased a used macbook, I am unable to find what year it was made, and for some reason when it goes to sleep, when the screen goes dark, it stops charging. I have had a mac before and this has never been an issue. It has been a while since I’ve had a new mac so I’m not sure if this is some type of battery saving setting but i cannot seem to find how to turn it off if it is.

That is very odd. Try booting into Safe Mode to see if you have the same issue.
Try an SMC Reset and PRAM Reset (hold the PRAM Reset for at least three chimes if possible...some newer Macs restrict it to one or two chimes now).
Did you perform a clean install of macOS by first erasing the drive before installing macOS?
You can get the exact model of the Mac by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". Also, provide the version of macOS being used.
