Apple Mail won't add a gmail address

I couldn't add my gmail account to mail. NOW SOLVED.

Days of trying. Then this...

Go to Preferences and set your default browser to Safari.

Open Safari and make sure you are not logged into your Google account.

Go back to System Preference>Internet Accounts and add your Google Account.

The confirmation will open your default Browser Safari. Log into Your Google Account.

All done.

So easy when you rely on Apple and not Google.

1) Safari > Settings > Privacy Tab > Advanced Settings > Uncheck all the checked boxes under "Privacy:"

2) Go back to mail app and add accounts normally.

3) Go back to step one but re-check the boxes that were unchecked.

The settings on 1) is only messing with logging in. But once authenticated, mail updates fine after safeguards are turned back on.

I was able to figure this out. For me, it was an issue with safari blocking pop ups. If you go to safari settings and allow pop ups for the google website (specifically the google account one) and you try again you will be able to add the gmail to your internet accounts.

Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…

It just needs an App Password separate from the gMail password…

I followed the steps in the video and it still didn't work for me. I found a work around

Work Around:

• Change default browser to Chrome (haven't tried other browsers but this one worked)
• Re-attempt to add your gmail account

** My issues was that MAC would try to authenticate through a private window. Couldn't figure out how to stop settings from defaulting to a "safari private browser." So the easiest thing to do was try changing the browser

Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…

If it's an IMAP account, delete it in Sys Prefs Internet Accounts then use "Other" instead of gMail choice to add it.

Most likely biggest factor is using Other in Mail setup, then using a Browser that doesn’t have gMail PW stored init to get the App PW.

Bingo... switching from Safari to Chrome as default browser to install GMail worked 123... finally, and even with private browsing on ... then switched back to Safari as default browser... thank you @KingInConstant!

Changing the default browser to Chrome - THIS WORKED! I wasted days trouble shooting, adjusting settings, deleting and trying to my gail accounts back up and running, and all I had to do the whole time was change the default browser to chrome in order to get it working again. Maddening... but I'm grateful for this post!

I had to change my default browser from Safari to chrome to be able to add my gmail.

Add it from Mail. go to Add Account and do it there not isn system settings.

****SOLVED**** Change default browser to Chrome until gmail account is added. Easy--done

I was having this problem trying to add a mail (not gmail) account just for Notes. In my ~/Library/Keychains folder, I found a subfolder with a long hexadecimal and hyphens name. I deleted that subfolder, logged out, and logged back in. I was then able to add the account, without having lost any passwords from my keychains.

It's possible that somewhere in your network stack the request is being blocked. Depending on the specifics of your configuration, one workaround might be to connect temporarily to another network (such as a WiFi hotspot if your phone provides one) and try again. You can switch back to your regular network once the account has been set up.

I also spent hours trying to solve this issue until I followed this video... It worked and my Gmail accounts are back on Mac Mail.
