Using unlocked iPhone 6 in Spain

My son has an iPhone 8 locked to the AT&T network. I have an old iPhone 6 (model NG4X2LL/A) that is unlocked. He is planning a trip to Spain next month. I'm trying to figure out if he can use the 6 while in Spain if he picks up a pre-paid SIM card there. He might be able to unlock the 8, but since we already have a spare 6 that is unlocked, it might be easier.

Well, easier... just in terms of using a SIM card sold in Spain, but he might have difficulties to transfer his data from his model 8 to your model 6.

Obviously, if he doesn't need to have his Apple ID/media/apps/docs on the model 6... then yes, it's easier.
