Is OSX 12.6.5 compatible with EpsonScan 2?

I used EpsonScan 2 successfully with my Epson Perfection V330 Photo scanner on my MacMini 2018 with versions of the MacOS through Big Sur, but when I updated to Monterey it became somewhat unreliable. I was able to use some through about 12.6.3, but when I updated to 12.6.5 it would no longer run. I get an error message "Unable to communicate with the scanner." Checking that the scanner is connected to the Mac and turned on didn't do anything.

Then I tried a Spotlight Search for "Epson" and was surprised to find a file EPSON Perfection V33-V330.app in [username]>Library>Printers>EPSON Perfection V33-V330.app Opening that file directly from the Finder does open the EPSON Perfection V33-V330.app which can, but in an odd and stripped-down interface which seems to require another app to have all the features that I used to see in the EpsonScan 2 app.

It looks like the 12.6.5 upgrade broke something in the EpsonScan 2 app which controls the other app.

I've tried to follow your instructions, I can't get them to work. I downloaded both the Epson Scan 2 utility and the ICA driver you suggested. The Epson Scan 2 still couldn't connect with the scanner, and the after I ran the ICA scanner I couldn't find it anywhere, even when I looked for something just installed. Should I have run the uninstaller for the Epson Scan2 package? Image Capture did notice the Epson Perfection V33-V330 app, but responded "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345), whatever that means. I can open the Epson Perfection V33-V330 app and use it to scan, but the interface is not what I was getting when I was able to run the Epson Scan2 app. See the image below.

I have been using VueScan Standard, and it can connect to the scanner driver even when the Epson scanner apps can't. It was what I turned to when I first started having trouble. VueScan has no trouble finding the Epson scanning interface. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles the Epson Scan 2 did, but for the moment it may have to do.

I'm puzzled because I was able to get Epson Scan 2 to run for a while after the upgrade to 12.6.5, but once I restarted the Mac I could not get it to run again, because it doesn't seem to work even when I follow your instructions and Epson's, and because VueScan does work when you don't expect it to. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Would Monterey do any better? I usually delay quite a while after a new version of MacOS comes out because something always seems to get broken. If I had to guess, I would think Apple may have picked up an older version of Epson's driver when when the put together the 12.6.5 update.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

After a several email exchanges and over an hour on the phone with an Epson tech, we found the problem. Somehow two copies of the Epson software got onto my Mac and it got confused. It was never clear where the mystery copy was either to the tech or to me, but we managed to flush it out and remove it. The hallmark of the problem I saw showed up when I tried to connect the Epson Scan 2 software to the scanner and the software could not find the scanner. I got an error message saying that it could not connect and asked me to try connecting the software and click YES to retry it. Doing so yielded another box canned scanner settings. You should see only one selection "EPSON Perfection V33/.... but I was seeing two.

If I selected the top listing or both, Epson Scan 2 could not connect to the scanner. After some fiddling around, the tech told me to try selecting the bottom option and I was able to connect to the scanner.

This is not the complete solution; the tech and I had to find a way to remove the extra copy of the software that was causing the problem. But it is a temporary work-around, and you can call Epson if a full removal of the extra copy, which took the tech about 1.5 hours to work with me on the phone and having access to my screen. I don't know what the root of the problem was. I did repeatedly try installing and uninstalling the Epson Scan 2 software available from Epson, but this started after the OSX 12.6.5 upgrade. The tech was able to remove the bad copy, so I think it's now finished.

Some further digging indicates Apple did make some changes in the 12.6.5 update. There is a Epson Perfection V33-V330.app file in the Printers/Scanner folder was dated 4 April 2023 at 3:24 A.M., as are other Apple Apps. When I look into Time Machine, that file was not in the Printers/Scanner folder before 4 April 2023, which I assume was either the update or a hidden Apple security update. (I'm not up at that hour.) That app is not identical to the version of the EpsonScan 2 app which I had used before. EpsonScan 2 is a different application, and when I started having trouble getting it to run, I downloaded a fresh version which also did not run. So it looks like the update did break the connection needed for the scanner to run.

The Epson site for your Perfection v330 scanner will inform when the last scanner drivers for the device were released and whether Epson shows it compatible with Monterey. Epson is responsible for their software, not Apple, and have access to the same Apple software developer tools as are available to all vendors.

Epson released an ICA scanner driver v5.8.12 in Oct 2022. That driver allows you to use Apple's Image Capture utility with the scanner. They also released the main scanner driver and Epson Scan 2 Utility v6.4.1.00 in Oct 2021, which they also show compatible with Monterey 12.x. There have been considerable changes to Monterey since it was released as 12.0 and for Epson to not keep their driver and software current is a giant leap of compatibility faith.

If the preceding Scan 2 Utility version does not work, you should fall back on that ICA driver and Image Capture. The optional, paid VueScan Professonal software requires a working Epson scanner driver to support this device so you will never be independent of Epson for driver support (while they provide it).

If you can get the job done with VueScan, then stick with that. I don't have an Epson scanner to do any testing here. I am unfamiliar with using Apple's Image Capture as I have been using VueScan Professional since 2010 on a Canon scanner.

I would Contact Epson support next and see what they have to say about stating their Oct 2022 driver and software do state specific compatibility with macOS 12.x — but in reality do not — because they haven't kept current with their driver and utility support.

I contacted Epson over the weekend, and they told me on Monday I should Uninstall the old software before installing the new version of Epson Scan 2. I did that and once again it didn't work, so I told them. No response yet.

VueScan Standard is adequate for most of my projects, but from time to time I need to save files in formats other than PDF, JPG, and TIFF. I also use GraphicConverter for editing and fixing up files like old photos. I'll give it one more try than go back to VueScan, but I am annoyed that something screwed up EpsonScan 2.

Epson is responsible for keeping Epson Scan 2 current (and compatible) with released Apple operating systems, and their updates.

Compiling a utility once in the earliest release timeframe for Monterey does not guarantee it will work with later versions of Monterey, or newer macOS upgrades. That is why Apple makes available beta software development kits (SDK) for individual beta releases of an operating system so vendors can stay current with changes in the operating system, and apparently, Epson doesn't bother, resuliting in dissatisfied customers — not only for your scanner but V500/V600 scanners too.

I have been going around with Epson on this, and just responded to a requests from Advanced Support for a series of screen shots in different stages, so they seem to be looking at the problem in more detail. So far everything I try winds up unable to connect via EpsonScan 2, although VueScan works and I can access what looks like an older Epson version if I put that into Scanners box in Printers & Scanners System Preference. A long and annoying process, although I will credit Epson with responding.
