I find Image Capture and Photos apps clumsy and designed with unnecessary steps to load selected photos into Pictures and thence to Photoshop. The Album thing just gets in the way. I can't find a way to transfer via USB directly from camera to Finder/Pictures. I'd like Ventura to see my Nikon as a Drive.

Thanks for your reply. I canceled my question (or thought I did) but maybe not soon enough. I did designate the camera as a device and successfully did the file transfer. My issue was created when the OS treated this camera (D7000) differently than my D80. It reads the D80 as a drive but the D7000 is read as a Finder/device which I didn't see until after my posting. I jumped to the conclusion that Image Capture was to blame, but obviously it's a communication thing between Nikon and Mac. (Also, I'm one of the 15% who really dislikes Lightroom). Thanks again.
Image Capture is actually a straightforward way to copy images from a camera to a plain folder on your Mac. From that folder, you can then open Photoshop and edit the photos. My daughter runs a photography business and uses Lightroom for all her image editing. She never uses Photos, but always uses Image Capture to basically move image files from the camera to a Mac folder that she designates.

I believe one of the other options (other than open Image Capture when the camera is connected) might be to simply show the camera as a device in the Finder. It depends on the camera. If you are able to do that, you will have to find the right folder on the camera with the images to copy them. Image Capture does this automatically.
The other advantage of using Image Capture is that it assigns the Finder creation date/time of the image to the internal EXIF DateTimeOriginal of the image. If you were to find a way to just drag the photos from your Nikon, the date/time stamp would be the current system time, not any chronology from the EXIF data.
