Apple Sidecar is unusable

I recently bought a Mac and an IPad pro in the hopes to replicate my prior PC dual screen setup.

The sidecar function is so hard to get going that it's impractical at this point.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

Have you tried this using both wired and wireless mode to get the same result? You can find instructions on getting this setup here: Use an iPad as a second display for a Mac - Apple Support
