I did not. After reading your comment I went back through this thread and tried some really detailed settings from somewhere earlier in the thread... 4k SDR, match frame rate, match dynamic range, RGB High. and nothing. I then reset my video settings. Still nothing. In fact, the suggested settings made everything darker.
The only solution I think will work is to spend $3k on a Sony Bravia 9, which is the brightest TV in the industry... by far. It can probably compensate for the dimming the Apple TV App is doing.
I am flabbergasted that Apple did not get this right. Netflix looks great, clearly Netflix is paying attention to these things.
Some people are suggesting that the Apple TV App on a laptop works, but not for me. And it would seem that the Apple TV App playing video on the built-in MacBook Pro display would get this right such that maximum brightness would show everything, but no. Apple controls the hardware (display) and software (Apple TV App) and content! Yet it is dark to the point of nearly being unwatchable. I have to just accept that some things and scenes are not visible or only have parts of the scene visible. I have a lot of content in the Apple TV App, but this problem has me want to switch away from Apple for TV and movie content entirely.
