Mac OS Monterey 12.6.4 will NOT open PDF files

Contrary to what is said, it is impossible to open a pdf file on Monterey, be it with Preview or Skim! It has nothing to do with the files, they used to open without problems in older system versions. It's a Monterey bug that Apple's engineers can't fix! Thank you very much Apple!

After restarting in normal boot mode, pdf open in SKIM normally (meaning, as before)

so, so far let's see if this has solved the issue (how? I don't know) but I cross fingers...

Booting into Safe Mode then restarting normally does a number of maintenance operations such as clearing caches, checking file directories, etc.

Strange that you recommend uninstalling the antivirus.

There are now specific viruses for mac (few compared to Windows but there are still some).

Also my antivirus scans for potentially fraudulent web sites. How can I do this without antivirus software?

Regarding CleanMyMac, the removal of unused programs is complete and leaves no preference or plist files lying around, which trashing the application does not do as well. This is what it says on the CleanMyMac website. Why not use CleanMyMac?

Sorry Luis, but for me this is not a sufficient argument for not using cleanmymac. And I've already read negative comments about this app but without any real proof of its harmfulness.

Is it because it does well what the Apple system does not?

According to Apple's advices, users don't need softwares like cleanmymac! OK, but then why isn't there an option in the system utilities to cleanly uninstall an application? I mean, uninstalling an app without leaving files from that app lying around after uninstallation?

Are you claiming that cleanmymac spreads viruses? This is serious and I think that in case it were true, there would have been consequences already? Do you have any information on this important point?

The first post I read on ASC is (I didn't change anything) :

– ASC: CleanMyMac X is unwanted. Uninstall it.

– user: Thank you for your answer, but this software is recommended by Apple as it is in the AppleStore.

The second ASC article I read says that the only application you need on a Mac is Malwarebytes (or AVAST).

– Malwarebytes is not free (it is said that the free version is sufficient...)

– AVAST that I had installed was a real disaster, it slowed down the system and created problems when using other apps.

Well, I don't want to get into the polemic, but in my opinion, these 2 posts illustrate the situation well: don't install this (but no proof of harmfulness), install this (but the full version is not free)...

Last point: Apple recommends not to disable SIP (system integrity protection). I've lost count of the number of comments from Mac users saying that they've been disabling SIP for years, with no problem since OS X is BSD unix and doesn't need Apple's security madness that blocks the installation of third-party applications like Total Finder, which does an excellent job that Apple no longer does...

Well, those are just my comments and anyway, thank you for your advices that helped me solve my problem with opening pdf (still working for now 😉)

Best

If you feel like basing your conclusion on 2 out of 11,400, feel free. lol

And for what it's worth…

"– user: Thank you for your answer, but this software is recommended by Apple as it is in the AppleStore."

That statement is blatantly false. Just because something is in the App Store doesn't mean Apple recommends it.

In any case, I'm done beating the dead horse. 😎
