2023 M2 MBP 16" will not restart successfully in clamshell mode

I have a new 2023 MBP 16 M2 (OS 13.3.1) which, at home, is connected to an OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock in 1 of the Thunderbolt ports, and is also connected to an Apple TBolt 27" display, using the monitor's Firewire 2 cable and an Apple Firewire 2 to Firewire 3 adapter in another of the MBP's Thunderbolt ports. I understand the idea that one can't cold boot the MBP in this clamshell configuration. I don't understand why a restart command never successfully completes. On restart, the attached dock and its attached drives go dark, re-spin up, the monitor powers up, but the log-in screen never appears. Never. Using a Magic Keyboard in wired mode or wireless has no effect. I have to pull the MBP out of its mount, open the cover to find the login screen already displayed, enter my password, and let the MBP continue to finish the restart, close the cover, and put the MBP back in its stand.

Does anyone else have this problem, or know of a solution?

Thanks,

post one of those panic reports.

Kernel Panic Reports are stored at:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

If you copy and paste that string into:

Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder

it will take you to where those reports are stored.

They are named with Date&Time and start or end in ‘panic’

If you find one, please post the entire report here, by copying its contents to the clipboard and then using the “additional text” Icon in the reply footer (looks like a paper with writing), and Paste.

Please don’t post more about 20 lines of any other types of reports — they are interminable, and any information useful for this purpose is on the first screenful.

Grant, I just want to follow up with you and let you know about my visit to the Genius Bar. The technician ran his set of diagnostics and found no errors, then we configured the MBP with a number of different monitors using an Apple AV adapter, so all the monitors were getting HDMI signals. There wasn't an Apple monitor in the bunch we tested in the shop. We couldn't make it fail..., the computer and monitors came to life with every restart, as it does when I take to MBP to my office and use the same dock set-up with a Dell monitor. I'm starting to suspect an incompatibility between the Thunderbolt 2 monitor and the M2 MBP. The Thunderbolt 3 monitor doesn't have an HDMI input, so I can't test that directly.

Thanks again for walking me through the diagnostics. I'm grateful for your help.

Thanks, Grant. Because I'm new to the M-series Macs, and I migrated to this one straight up to the installed Ventura from a Mojave workhorse, I have daily rotating backups of the machine until I'm comfortable with all that is new since Mojave. That's advice I gratefully accept.

I guess the next step is to run this by Apple Tech Support and see if there's a way to narrow down the buss error to a particular external device. The monitor is an Apple Tbolt monitor with an Apple T2 to t3 adapter. The non Apple equipment is the OWC Tbolt3 dock to which the only major piece of hardware attached is an OWC Thunderbay 6, populated with WD and Toshiba Enterprise drives.

I'll start swapping ports and devices and see if there's a magic configuration that works.

Thanks for your help, Grant. I appreciate it very much.

Thanks, Grant, that's certainly what it looks like, except that is starts up perfectly from a shutdown when it's not all lashed up to the dock and the monitor; and when it is lashed up and I go open the cover and enter my login pw, it boots normally. There seems to be something different about the 'restart' routine that's different from a cold reboot, besides the obvious. I'd appreciate any more thoughts...
