Ipod nano 7th generation no sound but bluetooth connected with new earbuds

I prefer to use my ipod nano 7th generation when working out. I recently bought new earbuds and have since gone down a deep rabbit hole and can't find a solution.

My nano will connect via bluetooth to all my different earbuds, but I can only hear sound on the earbuds from 2-3 years ago.

With my newest earbuds there is no sound. I know the newest earbuds work with my iPhone and my iPad. I tried with my husband's new earbuds and have the same problem - sound on iPhone and IPad but not on the nano.

I tried resetting the nano, I went into diagnostic mode and checked the bluetooth, I even wiped the nano and started fresh. No luck.

Has anyone else encountered this? Anyone have a suggested solution (other than using the old earbuds with short battery life until they die)?
