Displaying/Hiding Contact Lists on My iPhone

I used to be able to display only those contact "groups" that I wanted to display. I also could hide those that I did not want to display. In other words the list of groups had check boxes on them as to whether to be displayed or not, so I could select all those lists that I wanted to display most of the time and only see the others in specific situations.

Now they seem to be called "lists" and there are no checkboxes. I can only display them all "All iClod" or look at one "list" at a time.

Is there a way to revert to the old system. I want to display multiple often-used lists most of the time and hide the others, except in those special circumstances.

Thanks.

Let me explain why I need this ability. I have lists of contacts in other countries that I only use when visiting those countries. I do not want them displayed when home in order to prevent butt-dialing a foreign number -- at great expense. I used to be able to check all the "groups" of domestic contacts when home. When in France, for instance, I would check (to display) the French contacts...then uncheck them when I return home.
