messages from iPhone not getting into messages on Mac

Synch between my iPhone and Mac messages has once again stopped working.

The instructions on Apple's article "Use Messages in iCloud on Mac" - Use Messages in iCloud on Mac – Apple Support (UK) - do not correspond to what I see on screen.

I am signed in to my iCloud account on both my phone and Mac as the same user with the same PW. Password & Security 2-factor authentication is turned on. The Trusted Phone number is the number of my iPhone.

In Messages preferences/iMessage/settings pane "Enable Messages in iCloud" is checked. I clicked on Sync Now.

None of this worked.

Are there some better instructions somewhere?

I'm not sure why anyone would hate to give a recommendation to restart a device. It can't hurt, it may help, it's easy, non-destructive of data and it doesn't take long. I think it's a good place to start.

For Message issues, I've also found that logging out of iMessage on all of the devices, then restarting them, then signing back in on the iPhone, waiting until it activates then signing in on the other devices can resolve things.

If you're also trying to sync SMS messages between the two devices, remember there is an additional step. On the iPhone, you need to go to Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding and select your Mac.

This might be one of the cases where a restart on both devices could solve the problem. I hate giving this recommendation, but have seen many times where it has helped in this situation.

The other option that has worked for some people is switching iCloud off, then back on.

Since it had been working and suddenly stopped, it does not seem like a setting problem. I think it is just a glitch where it looses the syncing ability and needs a little jumpstart.
