I would like to use POP on my mac.

How do I set up my Mac (Monterey) so that I only get POP mail from google?

I have set the preferences (settings) in Google to POP and disabled iMap. But when trying to set up an account and I select GMail the apple mail program automatically sets up an imap account. As a result I get duplicate emails in different boxes.

That's what happens when you use POP, and that's why the world has moved onto IMAP, which maintains a more consistent view of your mailbox across systems.

When you configure Apple Mail to use 'Google Mail' it assumes IMAP. You'll likely have to add the account as a generic Mail account (even though it's hosted on Google Mail). Off hand, I don't recall how to do this - it's been a long time since I worked with POP - but I'm pretty sure it still supports it.

I suspect it occurs because I have written rules in the apple mail program to put mail in certain folders based on criteria like "Being in my address book". I have upwards of 20 rules that have a few hundred criteria that I have added over the years. Being that I don't keep my address book on Google, I,m not sure how to handle this issue. If I remove the rules I'll be flooded with Spam & Malware. Any suggestions you would have would be appreciated.

I don't use Google Mail but I don't believe POP vs IMAP should affect Mail Rules. You should be able to switch to IMAP with no effect on your Rules, but you are welcome to post them here for review.

Be sure to redact anything that could be considered personal — email addresses, for example.

The one disadvantage to Mail Rules is that there is no iOS equivalent.

John,

The Apple mail rules do work with gmail pop or imap. The problem is probably that in one example I rule that incoming mail that is in my address book be placed in a certain mail box; that same mail, in the gmail folders created by Google but on my computer, appears under all mail and sometimes in important mail also. So I have duplicates that I have to delete once or twice. Multiply that by 50 a day and I am employed by my computer as opposed to my computer working for me.

I still think you can find a way to make your Rules work with IMAP. I do much of what you describe with iCloud and other IMAP accounts. The limitations POP imposes are incompatible with my requirements.

Bear in mind that I only know enough about Google to know I want no part of what it does. If it is organizing mail into folders on its server before Mail has a chance to apply your Rules then perhaps there is something you can do on the server side to prevent that from happening.
